Things To Consider When Choosing New Zealand Accommodation

* How much is it? Remember your budget, and plan accordingly.

* Where is it located? Are services like restaurants, supermarkets, banks etc. nearby? Can you walk to these services or will you need to drive or catch a bus or cab (if available) to them? In peak periods, parking can be hard to find, and in some spots, central parking is metered so you pay as you go. If you do need to walk, how far, and is it a level walk or hilly (as parts of New Zealand are).

* Does it have a view? Because New Zealand is such a stunning place, a room with a view will enhance your holiday experience. And if it has a balcony even better. Nothing beats sitting on your balcony at days end, drinking a local beer or wine, and looking out over the sea/lake/snow capped peaks! Over the years we have stayed at many hotels with amazing views, and a few favorites of ours are the Anchor Inn at Kaikoura (oceanfront), Peppers Beacon at Queenstown (lakefront), Punakaiki Beach Resort (beachfront) on the South Island's West Coast, and the Hermitage at Mt Cook (the mountain is just "there" in front of you - awesome). In Wellington there are several waterfront hotels in the Oriental Bay area, and in Taupo and Rotorua there are several with great lake views. There are jewels like these all around New Zealand, so if budget allows, try for a room with a view.

* What facilities does your accommodation have? How does it compare to similar properties? Is a kitchen and laundry important? Cooking in your hotel can be much cheaper than eating out every night. And having your own laundry can save on laundromat bills. Do you need luxuries like a gymnasium or a swimming pool? What about internet access, or a tour desk to help you book tours? In the colder months, under cover parking is important. Is there a restaurant on site? Can you withdraw cash onsite if needed?

* What do other guests think of it? Remember to read reviews.

* What is their cancellation policy (just in case). If you cancel, will you lose all or part of your deposit? Don't forget that your travel insurance may cover any losses (read your policy carefully).

* It is also wise to check the availability of your New Zealand accommodation in peak times, such as the snow season and school holidays.
