Nelson Motels

If you are looking for information on the best Nelson motels, we can help

We know it can be difficult sorting through the huge range of Nelson motels, trying to find the right one for you.

So, we've partnered with our friends at Booking.com, and based on their huge database of reviews, and our own personal experience, we've narrowed it down to a selection of what we think are some of the best spots to stay in the beautiful Nelson and Tasman region.

A paradise on the shores of Tasman Bay

Nelson is the largest town in the Tasman region, and is located at the top of New Zealand's South Island, on the shores of Tasman Bay.

Famous for it's golden beaches, and the Abel Tasman National Park, the region is home to some 50,000 people, and includes the main centers of Nelson, Richmond and Stoke (which these days form one large center), and nearby settlements like Motueka, Mapua, Kaiteriteri, and Marahau.

Our best Budget Nelson Motels

The Prince Albert Backpackers

Location: 113 Nile Street Nelson (see on map)

Built in 1888, this historic backpackers and bar is a delightful place to stay, if you are looking for a good quality budget hostel.

5 minutes walk from the center of town, close to the main Nelson shopping area, and complete with on site meals and bar, it's a great place to relax and use as a base to explore the stunning Nelson region.

We love the free breakfasts and free wifi, complimentary bicycle use, and the free pick up/drop off service to the bus terminal (this needs to be pre-booked).

There's a spacious outdoor terrace area, and we were impressed by the value of the meals available on site.

They offer a variety of accommodation with dorm and private rooms, and all are clean with quality bedding.

Of course if you prefer to cook your own meals there's a well equipped communal kitchen.

The games room is the perfect place to meet new friends and there's nothing like a game of late night table tennis to prepare you for a good night's sleep.

Almond House Backpackers

Location: 63 Grove Street Nelson (see on map)

If you are looking for somewhere with that "homely" feel, then Almond House might just be the place.

Located in a quiet residential area of Nelson, it has a really relaxed feel, yet it's still only a short stroll to the bars and restaurants in town.

After a day exploring there are few things more relaxing than lazing away in one of their hammocks (it's the perfect opportunity to take advantage of their book exchange).

Then to top the day off, cook up your own special pizza on their outdoor oven!

Free wifi and bike hire are all part of the deal here, and with a range of accommodation from share to private, it's a nice comfortable place to spend a few days.

Quality bedding ensures a good nights sleep.

Best Mid Range Nelson motels

The Sails Nelson

Location: 7 Trafalgar Street Nelson (see on map)

The Sails is a beautiful motel offering studio and executive suites, and one bedroom apartments.

We love the apartments because they include a full kitchen, lots of space, and a private outdoor area.

This place oozes quality, and from the moment you step inside, you can see that they have taken their time to make this something special.

The bedding is sumptuous and the rooms are beautifully finished in cool earthy tones.

If you stay here, spoil yourself and have breakfast delivered to your room. The pancakes are to die for!

And just in case you eat too much, free bike hire is available, and there are lots of trails nearby, including along the waterfront (the view across Tasman Bay towards the mountains is amazing).

The bars, cafes and restaurants are only a short walk away, and remember to ask your hosts for some suggestions about where to eat.

If you just want to relax, Sky TV has over 50 channels, and there is free unlimited wifi.

The Sails is also wheelchair friendly.

Nelson motels don't come much nicer than the Cedar Grove Motor Lodge.

As you enter Cedar Grove Motor Lodge you can't help but be impressed. A huge cedar tree frames the entrance, and the lodge unfolds in front of you. Everything looks clean, modern, and inviting.

One of the great features here is that all studios and apartments have full kitchen facilities, very handy if you are staying for a few days.

Some also have spas, very welcoming after a day out exploring the region.

But if you don't want to eat in your room, the buzz of the Nelson central business area is only a block or so away, and it's loaded with a great range of bars and places to eat.

There's free Sky TV with over 50 channels, free unlimited wifi, an in room entertainment system with CD/DVD/radio, outdoor balconies or patios, and continental breakfasts to your room, if you desire.

Two special premium Nelson motels

Parautane Lodge

Location: 137 Parautane Way, Wakapuaka, Nelson (see on map)

Well, what can we say about the views from Parautane Lodge!

Sitting high on a hillside overlooking the brilliant blue waters of Tasman Bay, this is a very special location.

There can be few better locations for a B & B, and sitting on your deck gazing over the bay towards the mountains is something we can highly recommend.

You feel isolated here, but the action of central Nelson is only a 10 or 15 minute drive away (if you can drag yourself away from the lodge).

The suites are very comfortable, with quality linen, large bathrooms, and did I mention the views!

Yummy cooked and continental breakfasts are available and are best enjoyed on the deck (did I mention the views!).

Hint - try the home made muffins.

What a beautiful relaxing place to spend a few days.

The Waters

Location: 182 Kina Peninsula Road, Tasman, Motueka (see on map)

Wow! What a setting. Situated on the Kina Peninsula around 30 - 40 minutes drive from Nelson, The Waters bombards you with one of the most stunning settings imaginable.

This boutique B & B consists of three luxury suites looking out across the shimmering waters of Tasman Bay. To the front, your eyes are drawn to the open ocean, whilst at the rear of your suite, a deck extends out over a small lagoon.

Step down off the lawns on to the sandy beach and look for shells. Use the binoculars provided to watch local bird and marine life. Wander through the adjoining olive groves, or just sit on your balcony and relax in New Zealand's sunniest region.

Doze off to sleep in quality bedding and in the morning, take advantage of the delicious breakfast, supplied in your tariff (you room even includes an egg cooker for you to cook your own eggs, laid on the property).

If rest and relaxation are what you seek, look no further.
