Dart Stables Ride of the Rings

Welcome to New Zealand and Middle Earth

Your action packed 10 Day Lord of the Rings Tour begins in Wellington on the North Island, and concludes in Queenstown on the spectacular South Island.

Gollum at Wellington Airport

Join us as we visit many memorable film sets and meet people actually involved in the making of the trilogy.

Experience New Zealand's breathtaking scenery and unique culture as we trace our way through the wonders of the South Island.

North Island Tour Highlights

Kicking off in Wellington, we start the day with a full cooked breakfast (there are 9 cooked breakfasts on tour) before our visit to the Elven Cloak factory, to see where the cloaks and other items worn in the films were made. A great opportunity for some pictures and souvenirs.

Lothloriun

Next are the Helms Deep and Minas Tirith sites, and if weather conditions permit, we cross the hills to see the beautiful Leaving Lothlorien site.

Free time in Wellington gives you a chance to catch some of the cities highlights such as the iconic cable car or the National Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa. Both are highly recommended.

Wellington's iconic cable car

Whilst in Wellington, we swing past Peter Jackson's famous studios before stopping at Weta Workshop's Weta Cave to view their promotional video. It's also a great opportunity to view and purchase souvenirs.

That concludes our time on the North Island. The beautiful South Island awaits.

The Interislander Ferry Crossing

The Interislander in the Marlborough Sounds

Included in your tour cost is a trip on the Interislander.

Often referred to as one of the finest ferry trips in the world, the Interislander crosses Cook Strait from Wellington on the North Island, to Picton, in the Marlborough Sounds, on the South Island.

The 3 to 4 hour transit is the perfect introduction to the South Island's charms.

South Island Highlights

Our 10 Day Lord of the Rings tour continues on the South Island.

Pelorus River Dwarves in Barrels

From Picton, we make our way through rolling countryside towards Nelson. Along the way we stop at the pretty Pelorous River site where the Dwarfs escaped from the Elves. The deep clear pools and rugged rock outcrops provide some wonderful photo opportunities.

Whilst we are in the region, you have the chance to take an optional two and a half hour helicopter flight to the South of Rivendell site at the top of Mt Olympus, and Dimrill Dale at Mt Owen. Highly recommended.

Ring from the One Ring maker, Nelson

We also visit the Grape Escape for lunch, and the chance to taste some of the region's fine cheeses and wines.

We also visit the maker of the One Ring and have the chance to view a range of Hobbiton and LOTR jewellery.

The east coast awaits, where we stop for refreshments at the beautiful Kekerengu Store, overlooking the ocean. Along the way we also take the opportunity to watch fur seals basking and playing. A little further south we stop for lunch and the chance to shop at the picturesque seaside town of Kaikoura.

Seals basking near Kaikoura

From Kaikoura we continue South to the South Island's largest city, Christchurch, where we stop for the night.

Next on our adventure we visit the Edoras where we raise our Rohan Banner and stand on the Golden Hall site, before continuing south past the glistening waters of Lakes Tekapo and Pukaki. Framed by the Southern Alps and Mt Cook, Tekapo and Pukaki have the most glorious turquoise waters.

Heading for Edoras

The Pelennor Fields, and the Great Chase sites are also on our itinerary as are the sites where the Rohan village was burned and the leaf brooch was dropped. New Zealand's "Adventure Capital", Queenstown is home for several days, and you will be blown away by the location and variety of things to do. Flanked by towering mountains and built around a shimmering lake, Queenstown is one of the most spectacular towns in the world.

Pelennor Fields

We also visit nearby Arrowtown, a former goldrush site where Isildur was attacked at Gladden Fields. Also on the agenda are the Orc funeral pyre, Fangorn Forest, the log that Merry and Pippin hid beneath, and the spot where Sam and Frodo paddled away.

Plenty of free time in Queenstown allows you time to explore this wonderful region. There is so much to see and do you will be spoilt for choice.

The historic steamship TSS Earnslaw on Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown

Highly recommended are a gondola ride high above town to Bob's Peak for awesome views, or a leisurely trip to Walter Peak station on the historic TSS Earnslaw steamship. But perhaps the number one thing to do is a day coach trip to Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound. It's a big day but well worth the effort.
