Welcome to our 10 Day Classic Southern Panorama Tour of New Zealand's stunning South Island.
Join us as we take you in air conditioned comfort to the very best spots on this amazing island.
Our tour begins in the South Island's largest city, Christchurch. Often referred to as the "Garden City" Christchurch has over 700 parks. From Christchurch we head south across the Canterbury Plains to Ashburton for our first night.
Day two takes us south to the stunning turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo. Looking across the lake, Mt Cook and the towering Southern Alps form a spectacular backdrop. The drive from Lake Tekapo to Mt Cook highlights the wonderful scenery for which New Zealand is famous. Mt Cook is part of a World Heritage listed area and is a popular walking and climbing destination, and your visit to the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre reveals the history of the region. From Mt Cook we travel along the shores of Lake Pukaki to Omarama in the Lindis Range, our home for the night.
Dunedin is our next stop. This coastal city has a Scottish heritage and is home to historic Larnach Castle (entry included). Whilst in Dunedin we also participate in a traditional Scottish Haggis ceremony. Highly recommended optional tours are the Taieri Gorge Railway or one of several wildlife tours.
From Dunedin we head east to the pretty lakeside village of Te Anau. Often referred to as the "Gateway to Fiordland", Te Anau is the closest settlement to Milford Sound and is our stop for the night.
Milford Sound awaits. From Te Anau we travel past raging rivers, waterfalls and towering peaks, through the Eglington and Hollyford Valleys, before descending through the Homer Tunnel to Milford Sound. At Milford we join our tour boat for our cruise which takes us out to the open sea, past huge near vertical cliffs, and the thundering Bowen and Stirling Falls. It's easy to see why Milford Sound is rated as New Zealand's best attraction.
Day 6 takes us from Te Anau to New Zealand's "Adventure Capital", Queenstown. Situated on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, and surrounded by an enormous mountain range, Queenstown is surely one of the most scenic places on earth. Your tour includes a cruise on the historic steamship TSS Earnslaw to Walter Peak Homestead, where we stop for dinner. With free time in Queenstown there is ample opportunity for you to sample some of the many activities available. Highly recommended is a trip to Bob's Peak on the Skyline Gondola. Stunning views!
From Queenstown we head through the pretty lakeside town of Wanaka, on our way to Haast Pass and the wild West Coast and glaciers. Fox Glacier village is our home tonight and there is time to take the optional guided walk to the glacier face, or a thrilling helicopter ride over the glacier.
Leaving Fox Glacier we travel north to Franz Josef where we watch artists at work in a jade factory. From here its north again before heading inland through the Southern Alps via Arthurs Pass. The Canterbury Plains and Christchurch await as our tour draws to an end. You may choose the option of making this final leg on board the TranzAlpine train, regarded as one of the World's best train journeys.
